Republic of the Philippines Travel Information

Philippines Flag The Republic of the Philippines (Filipino: Republika ng Pilipinas) is a country in southeastern Asia. The country consists of an archipelago of more than 7,000 islands in the western Pacific Ocean. The islands are generally divided into three main geographical groups:
  • Luzon - Consisting of the Luzon, the largest island in the Philippines, as well the Batanes and Babuyan groups of islands, plus Catanduanes, Marinduque, Masbate, Mindoro, and Romblon. The island of Luzon contains the Philippines' capital, Manila.

  • Mindanao - Consisting of the island of Mindanao, which is the second largest and easternmost of the islands in the Philippines, as well as the Sulu Archipelago which lies to Mindanao's southwest. Mindanao is sometimes called "The Land of Promise".

  • Visayas - A group of islands, which are roughly speaking in the middle of the Philippines, lying between the Luzon and Mindanao groups.
As of 2009, the population of the Philippines was estimated to be 91,983,000. The capital city of the country, as already mentioned is Manila. with a population of almost 1.7 million. The country's largest city is Quezon City, which has a population of nearly 2.7 million. Both Manila and Quezon City both fall within a much larger urban area, known as the Metropolitan Manila ("Metro Manila") or the National Capital Region ("NCR"), which as of 2010 is believed to have a population in excess of 15.4 million.

The Philippines are considered a newly industrialized country, and the country's economy has been transitioning from being based around agriculture to being based on manufacturing and services. The economy has generally been growing in recent years (although often at a slower rate than many of its regional competitors) after a long period of relative stagnation. The Philippines however do face many economic challenges, including great disparities in wealth: almost half the population still has a daily income of less than US $2 per day.

Highways and major roads as well as minor and secondary roads are clearly designated and include distance in kilometers so travelers can easily plan their best route. • Ask any traveler who’s been to Southeast Asia and you’ll hear about Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, or Indonesia. Travelers from all over the world flock to the region blessed with an eternal summer, warm temperatures, majestic mountains, beautiful beaches, and affordable yet tasty cuisine. But seasoned intrepid travelers know that there is more to Southeast Asia than these countries. They know that there is a destination recognized by only a few, a place that still boasts of many undeveloped islands, a country whose popularity has grown by word of mouth within traveler communities. This is how I found out about the Philippines, the so-called Pearl of the Orient. Sitting in a bar one early evening in an island in Vietnam, I was talking to some backpackers who I made friends with during that trip. They told me that they’ve just come from the Philippines, just a few hours’ flight away, which had the most amazing scenery they’ve encountered during their Asian sojourn. Their eyes gleamed with delight as they told stories about the places, people, and the food. The Philippines and all her 7,107 islands has remained the biggest secret of Asia, known only to the most intrepid and adventurous of travelers. However it’s quickly becoming the vacation hotspot of choice. Unlike its Asian neighbors the Philippines still has numerous unspoiled beaches, breathtaking outdoor scenery, majestic mountains, and countless cultural attractions.
