Netherlands Travel Information

Netherlands Flag The Kingdom of the Netherlands (Dutch: Koninkrijk der Nederlanden) is a country principally located in northwestern Europe, the Netherlands (Dutch: Nederland), but also incorporating the autonomous territories of Aruba and the Netherlands Antilles (Dutch: Nederlandse Antillen) in the Caribbean Sea. The European part of the country borders Belgium and Germany, and has a coastline on the North Sea, the Netherlands Antilles has a land border with the French territory of Saint Martin.

As of 2006, the Kingdom of the Netherlands had an estimated population of just over 16.8 million. About 16.5 million people lived in the Netherlands, with a further 200,000 living in the Netherlands Antilles, and 100,000 in Aruba.

The capital and largest city of the country is Amersterdam, which as of 2006 had a population of 743,104. Additionally, there are 20 other Dutch cities with populations of over 100,000. However, almost half of the Dutch population, roughly 7.5 million people, live in Randstad, which is a large conurbation incorporating the four largest Dutch cities (Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht), as well as numerous smaller cities.

The Netherlands has a modern highly-advanced economy with very high-levels of GDP per capita. The country is a founding member of the European Union, a member of the eurozone, and cooperates especially closely with Belgium and Luxembourg as part of the Benelux group.
