Montserrat Travel Information

Montserrat Flag Montserat is a British Overseas Territory located in the Caribbean Sea, part of the Leeward Islands. The island is sometimes called the "Emerald Isle of the Caribbean" both because many of its inhabitants are of Irish descent, and because the island is said to resemble coastal Ireland.

In 1995, the previously dormant Soufriere Hills volcano erupted. The volcano destroyed the capital, Plymouth, and caused about two thirds of the island's population to flee abroad. Even today the eruption is continuing, albeit on a much reduced scale, and as result an exclusion zone covers much of the islands, and visitors are not allowed to enter Plymouth. At the moment, the village of Brades (which is also known as "Brades Estate") is serving as the defacto capital, and a new town, Little Bay is being constructed on the North island, out of reach of the volcano.

As of the 2006, the estimated population was 4,655. The defacto capital since 1998, Brades has a population of about 1,000.

Product Description:

The British Overseas Territory of Montserrat is an island in the Caribbean, south-east of Puerto Rico.

The northern half of the island is untouched, as beautiful as it ever was, green and lush; visiting it is perfectly safe.

The active volcano (which can be viewed from a good distance) has become a tourist attraction in its own right. Montserrat is still well worth visiting, and the locals go out of their way to be encouraging and welcoming to tourists.

Wink Travel Guides introduce you to the best world travel destinations, in a clear and concise way, illustrated by photos.

Product Description:
The people of Montserrat are very proud of their cultural heritage. Originally of African descent, a strong Afro-Irish mix is evident in their local dialect, the cuisine, music and dances practiced locally. Although not captured in any dictionary the dialect or broken English also known, as Montserrat English is very important to the Montserrat folk. In foreign countries they can be heard talking their dialect among themselves. In foreign hospitals the meaning of a sentence can be misconstrued as a result of their tone and use of certain words. The Montserrat dialect sometimes sounds like the Jamaican Patois and it is hard to convince some folk that Montserratians are not Jamaicans. A single word doesn’t always give meaning to what is intended but rather a phrase. It is important to note that spelling of words can be interchangeable and dependent on where the emphasis is placed phonetically.
